This is my instruction for those wanting to remove DRM from Kindle books, convert books and return books at no cost to you.
You will need: Calibre, Kindle for PC 1.16 version. Know where your download folder for Kindle Content is. Kindle registration and some brought books. General computer knowledge of list view and copy/paste procedures.
1. Install a file marked DeDRM Tools 6.6.1 plugin for Calibre through Google. Find and extract contents once only. You should see another folder and inside that folder will be another Zip file. DO NOT EXTRACT THE 2nd ZIP FILE.
Download Kindle for PC version 1.16 - Do NOT download the latest version of Kindle for PC as this will not work on the latest version. Avoid Softonic sites, although Filehippo is generally okay.
Run calibre. From the Preferences menu at top right (or tab below right) select “Change calibre behavior”.
Click on Plugins (under “Advanced”) — it looks like a jigsaw puzzle piece.
Click on the large “Load plugin from file” button.
Navigate to the folder you have stored the DeDRM Tools 6.6.1.
Find the folder with the 2nd zip file - not the original - and select the DeDRM_plugin.zip file in that folder.
Click on the “Add” (sometimes “Open”) button.
Click on the “Yes” button in the “Are you sure?” warning dialog that appears. A “Success” dialog will appear, saying that the plug-in has been installed. Click on “OK”.
Check your file types and you will see the DRM file should now be included.
2. Buy some Kindle books through your app or such way you normally do.
Run Kindle for PC version 1.16. Choose list view on top left - not grid.
Hit refresh or circle icon. Your latest books you brought should appear if they haven't already.
Double click onto title and see it download in bar at right of screen. If the 1st book appears on page, click Library to go back to the list.
Download all books you need to.
3. Open Calibre. Select 'Add Books' at top right. Find your Kindle folder and then choose 'date created/modified' in detailed view. This is your new book(s) and select (hold control down to select several books).
Books should now open in Calibre with the covers pictured on right.
If not, you are using the latest version of Kindle for PC and not version 1.16.
Select (or control A) books and go to 'Convert Books' tab in 3rd left at top. In output mode at right, choose your format (epub, pdf, etc...) and convert.
Because you have the DRM plug installed, the converted books will automatically have the DRM removed.
Find source folder for converted books and copy/paste into another seperate folder that you want to keep all content into (e.g. Kindle 2018).
Hint: you can get the full title of converted book(s) by highlighting the Calibre title and pasting it into the converted one. Or just type it in manually yourself.
4. Having now brought Kindle books and extracting them out to your favourite folder, you can, if you wish, return the books.
While I don't recommend this lawfully, this is good if you've already brought the physical copy and simply need a digital backup - having already paid for it already (in another format).
Go to and sign into Amazon.com.au or your Amazon account as required. At top right, click 'Your Account' and click 'Manage Books and Devices' from the drop down menu.
You will see your books appear on left of page. You will see two buttons at left of book. Click the 2nd from left. A menu will pop up and at bottom should be a return book option. Click that and then pick a reason why you're returning book from menu.
You should be able to return up to $50 worth of books, if not more, before you get a 'contact us' message. All okay, just wait another month and do it all again.
After all the initial set-up, it's simply, buy book(s), download on Kindle for PC 1.16, add books to Calibre, convert, store and rename, return and repeat. Simple. And I've been doing this for around 4 years now. Works every time.
